Although my birthday has come and gone, I am content that I chose to spend this birthday a little differently than in the past. Inspired by friends, who have chosen to celebrate their birthdays by giving to others, I decided to try it out myself this year. Originally I had planned to carry out 29 acts of kindness, one for every year of my life. I even drafted out a list of ideas for ways to make others smile. I'll admit that in part this was a selfish act, since giving to others makes me happy.
I am pretty certain that I didn't reach 29 acts of kindness over the course of my birthday week but I was able to sprinkle a little bit of kindness around and it was so worth it. One of my favorite memories occurred the day before my birthday when I picked up two dozen hot doughnuts from Krispy Kreme and delivered them, along with a smile and "have a good day" message, to those individuals who I see each morning on the way into work. It was such a rewarding experience for me.
Ever since I learned about the birthday party project, I've been determined to support their mission in bringing joy to homeless children through the magic of birthdays. This year I was thrilled to share my birthday by giving to the children, whose lives are improved by this amazing organization. I had lots of fun picking out colorful party supplies from the the birthday party project's wish list and imagining the smiles that would ensue from such a simple act.
I look forward to continuing this tradition each birthday. Perhaps you'll join me and #shareyourbirthday too?!
